Welcome to the New Five United Nations' Security Council

The General Assembly of the United Nations with 193 countries pick five countries as new members of the UN Security Council, Friday (2/6). The fifth country, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, Kuwait, Peru and Poland. They entered service on 1 January 2018 for a period of two years.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands was elected member of the Security Council for one year, replacing Italy to share the two-year membership period. The second related to the vote of the country in the past year experienced a deadlock. They agreed to establish Italy became members in 2017, while the Netherlands the following year.

All the countries that nominate themselves to become members of the Security Council none opposed. But each country requires more than two-thirds of the overall vote to get a seat membership.

Côte d'Ivoire obtained 189 votes, Equatorial Guinea 185, 186, 188 Kuwait Peru, Poland and the Netherlands 190 184 votes.

The UN Security Council consists of 15 countries, namely, the five permanent members and ten members not fixed that selected five countries every year. The fifth permanent member countries who have the right of veto (reject) it was the United States, United Kingdom, France, China and Russia.

The Security Council is the only UN agency that can make decisions as binding and has the power to impose sanctions and ordered the deployment of the force.

To ensure representation of regions in the Security Council, five of the ten seats not distributed membership for countries of Asia and Africa, one to Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean for two, and two for the Western European and other countries.

The Group of countries of the region usually agree on a candidate that will be brought forward and rarely there is competition to get seats. However, among human rights activists said the mechanism was a "serious problem".

"Member States should be able to choose whether they trust the country such as Equatorial Guinea to maintain international peace and security," said the Director of the United Nations, Human Rights Watch Louis Charbonneau, as quoted Reuters.

Equatorial Guinea is regarded as a country that is harassing defenders of human rights and civic groups. This country, said Louis, also rated often do the detention arbitrarily.

However, the Government of Equatorial Guinea denied the charges regarding corruption and violation of human rights.

Trump Allowed Military To Set Up The Number of Troops in Afghanistan

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has given the Secretary of Defense, Jim Mattis, an authority to to set troops deployed in Afghanistan.
