Russia sentenced a one-month jail to Alexei Navalny, a figure who criticizes President Vladimir Putin and invites for about thousands of citizens to do the biggest anti-corruption rallies since 2012.
Navalny spokesman, Kira Yarmysh, said that his client was convicted on charges of co-ordinating an illegal protest act.
Not just doing the rally, Navalny also convinced the Russian youth to launch an internet campaign to deny Putin in the next year elections in order to avoid corrupt governments.
Not only Navalny, authorities also arrested 1,500 other protesters from all over Russia, including 823 people in Moscow, where police tried to disperse the mass by force.
When police dragged some people from the crowd, the demonstrators shouted, "Shame! Putin is a thief! Free Navalny! "
Meanwhile, 600 people protesters in Saint Petersburg was also seized. More than 100 demonstrators were also arrested in several cities, including Kaliningrad, Vladivostock, Norilsk, and Sochi.
Eventhough many of the demonstrators were seized, the witnessed kept shouting, "Russia without Putin!"
One of the protesters, Alexander Tyurin, even proclaimed, "Putin has already ruled for 17 years and had no plans to resign. He seized all power! "
The detention by authorities was also denounced by many parties, including the United States which is now headed by Putin's colleagues, Donald Trump.
"The US is urging Russia to immediately release all the protesters," said the White House spokesman, Sean Spicer.
Criticism also came from the European Union who are worrying about "the detention of hundreds of peaceful protesters and violence committed by authorities against them."
Similar with the European Union, Amnesty International denounced the detention and any violence; calling Russia in "precarious."
