United States Secretary Of Defense, Jim Mattis, claimed not to find any good will that indicate Russia's President, Vladimir Putin, wants a good relation with U.S.
"I see there is no indication that shows Putin wanting a positive relationship with us," said Mattis in a meeting with the representatives of U.S. armed services committee, Monday (12/6).
However, Mattis emphasized the act that Putin took did not mean the two countries are unable to establish a good relation. Putin is only trying to be a competitor for the U.S.
"Recently, he chose to become a competitive, strategic competitor for U.S. and we have to deal with it properly," confirmed Mattis.
The U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Joseph Dunford, admitted that Russia and the U.S. still have conflicting relationship, one is the difference of interests, including the interest of Syria.
During this time, the U.S. and Russia are indeed having the same view toward the eradication of terrorists in Syria. However, the US formed a coalition to attack ISIS, while Russia stormed to support the regime of Bashar al-Assadm who is considered as the mastermind behind the prolonged conflict in Syria.
The US also condemned the colonialized of Russia over the Crimea. Since the annexation, the U.S. brought a number of sanctions over Russia.
Currently, the US Congress is considering additional sanctions for Russia. They're even discussing the regulation that allows the overthrow sanctions without Congressional approval.
