The number of death in the fire that happened in an apartment in Grenfell Tower, Kensington, London, increased to 17 people, as reported by local authorities. It had been previously predicted, relating to loss of hope in finding survivors from the incident.
"I confirmed that death in the fire rise to 17 people," said London's Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy in a statement.
"We also believe that the number of death will continue to grow," he said, quoted AFP.
Grenfell Tower, which is as high as 27 floors, was a home for around 600 people. Not all floors successfully evacuated when the fire broke out. A dozen families are still declared missing.
The London Fire Brigade Chief Dany Cotton mentioned the officer could not access all over the floors because the security concerned on the structure of the building and just did the evacuation until the 12th floor.
Now, officers are using sniffer dogs to help finding buried bodies under the ruined building.
"Officers will continue to search until the few weeks after. Hope of finding survivors are very fragile this time," said Cotton to Sky News.
Witnesses told that the top-floor apartment dwellers turned on the flashlight on their cell phone to attract attention, before they disappeared from the window. Their shout was also no longer heard.
"We see them dying," said Adi Estu, 32, who successfully evacuated from the apartment.
He continued that some people jumped from the building to escape, while there were witnesses who saw a mother threw her baby from the 10th floor to be catched by a man under and survived the fire.

Kostas Tsavdaridis, Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Leeds warned, "some of the material used as pillars in the facade are flammable."
"Theoretically, the second should be fireproof, but in many cases, it's just a heat-resistant material, not fireproof," he explained.
