At least 22 people were killed after strucked by lightning when heavy rains felt in Bangladesh in the past two days, after a landslide also afflicted the citizens.
The head of Bangladesh Natural Disaster Management, Reaz Ahmed, told AFP Monday (19/6), dozen of people were killed when the storm swept through the country since Sunday.
Ahmed pointed out, the victims included a pair of husband and wife and their daughter who were working in the bean plantation when the great lightning came.
The incidents that caused by lightning are indeed common in Bangladesh. Each year, hundreds of people were killed after being struck by lightning. A number of experts said, this happens because of the climate change.
In addition, the experts also considered, the deforestation and the disappearance of high trees also make lightning striking more deadly.
Last year, authorities even declared a national disaster because the death toll reached 200 people, with 82 people died every day. One of the independent agencies reported, a total of 349 people were killed by lightning strikes along 2016.
The disaster relief workers then looked for ways to reduce the number of victims. One program that can be done is to plant one million trees.
Not only that, the Bangladesh Meteorological Agency also trained 20 thousand school students, training them to avoid lightning strikes.
