Some Hillary Clinton Emails Are Declared 'Top Secret' By State Department

The State Department has marked twenty-two emails from Hillary Clinton's private email server as "top secret" and won't be released, cited from Friday

The emails were not marked as classified at the time they were sent.

"We can confirm that later today, as part of our monthly FOIA productions of former Secretary Clinton's emails, the State Department will be denying in full seven email chains, found in 22 documents representing 37 pages," State Department spokesman John Kirby told reporters.

"The documents are being upgraded at the request of the intelligence community because they contain a category of top secret information," Kirby said.

Clinton campaign spokesman Brian Fallon said that Clinton said the emails should be released and called at least one case, "over-classification run amok."

"We firmly oppose the complete blocking of the release of these emails," Fallon said in a statement. "Since first providing her emails to the State Department more than one year ago, Hillary Clinton has urged that they be made available to the public. We feel no differently today."

The revelations come just three days before the Iowa caucuses, where Clinton and chief Democratic rival Bernie Sanders are running neck-and-neck. Clinton's campaign has been dogged by her use of a private email server, and she has been hammered by her GOP opponents who have accused her of jeopardizing national security.

Sanders was notably dismissive of the email issue during a Democratic debate last year, contending that Americans are sick of hearing about her "damn emails." In a statement Friday afternoon, Sanders largely reiterated that sentiment, saying, "As I said at the first Democratic debate, there is a legal process in place which should proceed and not be politicized. The voters of Iowa and this nation deserve a serious discussion of the issues facing them."

Clinton remained defiant and at times dismissive of the issue for much of 2015. Last September she shifted her tone, apologizing for not using a government issued email address.

Kirby also announced today that 18 emails — from 8 distinct chains — between then Secretary Clinton and President Barack Obama are being withheld from the court -ordered FOIA release, because of the law governing the release of presidential documents. These email exchanges are not classified.

Meanwhile, the White House put in context a comment at Friday's press briefing by spokesman Josh Earnest regarding the Clinton e-mail issue.

Earnest had been asked if he could with "certainty and confidence" say that Secretary Clinton will not be indicted because of the e-mail scandal.

"That is a decision to be made solely by independent prosecutors. But again, based on what we know from the Department of Justice, it does not seem to be headed in that direction," Earnest said.

Later, asked about the comment, the press office said the Justice Department has not been keeping the White House informed about the investigation. Earnest, the White House explained, was referring to some newspaper accounts and public comments that came out last year.

Officials at the FBI and the Justice Department are nonetheless concerned about the implication of Earnest's statements and have been emphatic that there have been no progress reports on the investigation.

Nigerian army Claims the Second Rescue of Chibok Girl

A second schoolgirl that was seized in the Nigerian town of Chibok has been found, the army says. But a spokesman for the Chibok girls' parents has cast doubt on the claims, saying that the girl's name is not on the families' list of those missing. An army spokesman said Serah Luka was among a group of 97 women and children rescued by troops in the north-east. Islamist militant group Boko Haram has abducted thousands of other girls in recent years, rights groups estimate. This comes two days after the rescue of the first Chibok girl, Amina Ali Nkeki. The army has previously given misleading statements about the rescue of the Chibok girls - in its initial statement after Ms Nkeki was found, it used a wrong name. In all, 218 girls remain missing after their abduction by the Boko Haram Islamist group from Chibok secondary school in north-eastern Nigeria in 2014. Ms Nkeki told a Chibok community leader that six of the kidnapped girls had died, but...

Hong Kong Lunar New Year Celebrations Erupt in Violence as Police Clear Food Stalls

Hong Kong's Lunar New Year celebrations have descended into chaos as police leared illegal food stalls set up on a busy junction for Lunar New Year celebrations, leaving dozens injured or arrested. Riot police used batons and pepper spray and fired warning shots into the air early on Tuesday after authorities tried to move illegal street vendors from a district in the city. Protesters hurled bricks at police as scuffles broke out, while other demonstrators set fire to rubbish bins in the streets of Mong Kok, a gritty neighbourhood across the harbour from the heart of the Asian financial centre. A police statement said that three men aged 27 to 35 were arrested for assaulting a police officer and obstructing police, while another three police officers received hospital treatment. Broadcaster RTHK said later that 24 people had been arrested. The scuffles broke out after police moved in to clear "hawkers", or illegal vendors who sell local delicacies, trinkets and ...

Ted Cruz Loses Over Three Consecutive Trump Victories

Real estate mogul Donald Trump received victory over top rivals Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) and Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) in Tuesday's Nevada GOP caucus, setting up a particularly difficult road ahead for Cruz. Republican presidential candidate Sen. (JOSH EDELSON via Getty Images on Monday)   Trump has now won three straight state contests and appears to be barreling toward the Republican presidential nomination, while Cruz has only won one state, Iowa. Cruz's campaign had hoped to eke out a win in Nevada based on the strength of his political organization and ground game, which helped lead him to a similar victory in the Iowa caucus earlier this month. The caucus format relies on turning out voters who are engaged enough to spend several hours participating in the political process. By contrast, Trump has lagged behind Cruz and Rubio in his organizing efforts, and political observers expre...
