Kate Winslet Adds One More Award with London Critics Prize

London Critics' Circle Film Awards named Kate Winslet as the best supporting actress, several days after receiving an Oscar nomination.

She has already won a Golden Globe for Steve Jobs, in which she played the Apple guru's right-hand woman.

Tom Courtenay and Charlotte Rampling, stars of marital drama 45 Years, were named best actor and best actress.

The British film won three awards, equalling the tally of Mad Max: Fury Road at the central London ceremony.

Post-apocalyptic thriller Mad Max: Fury Road was named film of the year by the UK's film critics, while George Miller received the director of the year award.

Tom Hardy was named British/Irish actor of the year for his 2015 body of work, including Mad Max, Oscar frontrunner The Revenant and Legend, in which he played the Kray twins.

Sir Kenneth Branagh arrived at the event with Dame Judi Dench, who presented him with the Dilys Powell Award for excellence in film. The pair have recently appeared together on stage in A Winter's Tale.

The British/Irish actress of the year prize went to Saoirse Ronan for Colm Toibin's Brooklyn.

Despite scoring seven nominations, Cate Blanchett romance Carol only won one award, for cinematography.
'Golden tickets'

Winslet, speaking of the nomination that could see her win a second Oscar, said: "I really can't believe it because it has been a very strong year.

"No one has been a shoo-in. People have been flitting in and out of this best supporting actress category for quite some time.

"They were like the golden tickets this year. They were really very coveted spots, particularly in this category, so I'm absolutely thrilled. I loved the experience of making it so it's ultimate cherry on the cake to be nominated."

She tipped Leonardo DiCaprio for the best actor Oscar for The Revenant, saying that it is "probably going to be Leo's year".

"I think you can sort of feel it and I think everyone wants it for him," added Winslet, who won the best actress Oscar for 2008 film The Reader.

45 Years, based on a short story by David Constantine, shows the lives of married couple Kate and Geoff whose relationship is threatened as they prepare for their 45th wedding anniversary.

It has also been nominated for best British film at next month's Bafta film awards.

Rampling is in the running for the best actress award at next month's Academy Awards for her role in 45 Years, which was named the British/Irish film of the year.

Fellow Oscar contender Mark Rylance was named best supporting actor at the awards, at London's May Fair hotel, for Bridge of Spies.

Other winners included Asif Kapadia's Amy Winehouse film, Amy, which was named documentary of the year, and Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams, who won the young British/Irish performer award for her role in The Falling.

Benjamin Cleary, also in the running for the Academy Awards, won the British/Irish short film of the year award for Stutterer.

Nigerian army Claims the Second Rescue of Chibok Girl

A second schoolgirl that was seized in the Nigerian town of Chibok has been found, the army says. But a spokesman for the Chibok girls' parents has cast doubt on the claims, saying that the girl's name is not on the families' list of those missing. An army spokesman said Serah Luka was among a group of 97 women and children rescued by troops in the north-east. Islamist militant group Boko Haram has abducted thousands of other girls in recent years, rights groups estimate. This comes two days after the rescue of the first Chibok girl, Amina Ali Nkeki. The army has previously given misleading statements about the rescue of the Chibok girls - in its initial statement after Ms Nkeki was found, it used a wrong name. In all, 218 girls remain missing after their abduction by the Boko Haram Islamist group from Chibok secondary school in north-eastern Nigeria in 2014. Ms Nkeki told a Chibok community leader that six of the kidnapped girls had died, but...

Hong Kong Lunar New Year Celebrations Erupt in Violence as Police Clear Food Stalls

Hong Kong's Lunar New Year celebrations have descended into chaos as police leared illegal food stalls set up on a busy junction for Lunar New Year celebrations, leaving dozens injured or arrested. Riot police used batons and pepper spray and fired warning shots into the air early on Tuesday after authorities tried to move illegal street vendors from a district in the city. Protesters hurled bricks at police as scuffles broke out, while other demonstrators set fire to rubbish bins in the streets of Mong Kok, a gritty neighbourhood across the harbour from the heart of the Asian financial centre. A police statement said that three men aged 27 to 35 were arrested for assaulting a police officer and obstructing police, while another three police officers received hospital treatment. Broadcaster RTHK said later that 24 people had been arrested. The scuffles broke out after police moved in to clear "hawkers", or illegal vendors who sell local delicacies, trinkets and ...

Ted Cruz Loses Over Three Consecutive Trump Victories

Real estate mogul Donald Trump received victory over top rivals Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) and Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) in Tuesday's Nevada GOP caucus, setting up a particularly difficult road ahead for Cruz. Republican presidential candidate Sen. (JOSH EDELSON via Getty Images on Monday)   Trump has now won three straight state contests and appears to be barreling toward the Republican presidential nomination, while Cruz has only won one state, Iowa. Cruz's campaign had hoped to eke out a win in Nevada based on the strength of his political organization and ground game, which helped lead him to a similar victory in the Iowa caucus earlier this month. The caucus format relies on turning out voters who are engaged enough to spend several hours participating in the political process. By contrast, Trump has lagged behind Cruz and Rubio in his organizing efforts, and political observers expre...
