Mitt Romney Will Give His Vote for Ted Cruz in Utah

Mitt Romney, the 2012 presidential nominee, will vote for a candidate Tuesday who has hardly embraced him: Ted Cruz.

The former Massachusetts governor posted on Facebook Friday that he will support Cruz in Utah, where Romney currently resides. Romney did not use the word "endorsement," and he has personally encouraged Republicans to engage in what is called "strategic voting" in which they cast ballots for the GOP candidate most likely to stop Donald Trump in their respective state.

"This week, in the Utah nominating caucus, I will vote for Senator Ted Cruz," he wrote, saying that no candidate besides Trump can win before a convention -- which Cruz himself disagrees with. "The only path that remains to nominate a Republican rather than Mr. Trump is to have an open convention. At this stage, the only way we can reach an open convention is for Senator Cruz to be successful in as many of the remaining nominating elections as possible."

Romney, perhaps the country's most prominent Mormon politician, could give Cruz a boost in Utah's caucuses, where Mormons form a majority of the state's population and the candidate is scheduled to campaign this weekend. On Friday, Cruz told a local radio host that he had a "significant lead" over Trump.

Romney maintained that he had respect for Ohio Gov. John Kasich, the only other remaining GOP candidate and with whom he has campaigned. Cruz's Utah state chairman, Phill Wright, said after Romney's backing early Friday morning that Cruz had no plans to campaign with Romney in the state.

"I would have voted for him in Ohio. But a vote for Governor Kasich in future contests makes it extremely likely that Trumpism would prevail," Romney said.

On the campaign trail, Cruz has had often very harsh words for Romney, dubbing him a seriously flawed messenger against Barack Obama in 2012 and characterizing him as part of the GOP's "mushy middle" repeatedly in his stump speech.

But he quickly thanked Romney for the support in a tweet Friday afternoon. Asked at a news conference on the Arizona-Mexico border later Friday why anti-Trump Republicans such as Romney had not offered full-fledged endorsements, Cruz said Romney's vote was sufficient.

"I'll take that, and take that happily," Cruz told reporters.

Other campaigns reacted less kindly: A few minutes after Romney made his news, Kasich's chief strategist, John Weaver, tweeted: "Good to know Ted Cruz is the establishment, K-Street backed candidate. #HelloStatusQuo."

Later Friday, Kasich's campaign released a new web ad in Utah that highlighted when Romney stumped for him in Ohio.

And Trump, who has been even harsher toward Romney than Cruz has, said the former Massachusetts governor's support for Cruz was good for his campaign.

"Failed presidential candidate Mitt Romney, the man who 'choked' and let us all down, is now endorsing Lyin' Ted Cruz. This is good for me!" he tweeted.

.

He added, "Going to Salt Lake City, Utah, for a big rally. Lyin' Ted Cruz should not be allowed to win there - Mormons don't like LIARS! I beat Hillary."

Nigerian army Claims the Second Rescue of Chibok Girl

A second schoolgirl that was seized in the Nigerian town of Chibok has been found, the army says. But a spokesman for the Chibok girls' parents has cast doubt on the claims, saying that the girl's name is not on the families' list of those missing. An army spokesman said Serah Luka was among a group of 97 women and children rescued by troops in the north-east. Islamist militant group Boko Haram has abducted thousands of other girls in recent years, rights groups estimate. This comes two days after the rescue of the first Chibok girl, Amina Ali Nkeki. The army has previously given misleading statements about the rescue of the Chibok girls - in its initial statement after Ms Nkeki was found, it used a wrong name. In all, 218 girls remain missing after their abduction by the Boko Haram Islamist group from Chibok secondary school in north-eastern Nigeria in 2014. Ms Nkeki told a Chibok community leader that six of the kidnapped girls had died, but...

Obama administration Issues Transgender Access to School Bathrooms

The issue of directing public schools to allow transgender students to use bathrooms matching their gender identity is being discussed by the Obama administration on Friday. A joint letter from the Departments of Education and Justice will go out to schools on Friday with guidelines to ensure that "transgender students enjoy a supportive and nondiscriminatory school environment," the Obama administration said on Thursday. The announcement comes amid heated debate over transgender rights in schools and public life, which includes a legal standoff between the administration and North Carolina over its controversial House Bill 2. The guidance goes beyond the bathroom issue, touching upon privacy rights, education records and sex-segregated athletics, all but guaranteeing transgender students the right to identify in school as they choose. "There is no room in our schools for discrimination of any kind, including discrimination against transgender students on ...

Will Ferrell and His Bird Collectian As "The Birds are for God"

An acclaimed actor and comedic genius like Will Ferrell is incredibly pleased to spend some valued time with his incredibly expensive bird collection, according to his good friend Adam McKay. McKay, who has directed Ferrell in films like "Anchorman" and "Step Brothers," told HuffPost Live on Monday that Ferrell's home is brimming with birds of all kinds, and Ferrell himself is a bit of a bird whisperer. "He has giant cages on his property filled with different tropical birds, and these are the kind of birds that will bite you, that you have to be careful with, but when it's him, they just fly right to his arm," McKay said. "Often times if you're at his house ... he has, like, a cockatiel on his shoulder for long stretches." An affinity for birds isn't exactly surprising, but what will shock you is the enormous monetary value of Ferrell's flock. "He had to have his bird collection insured, and I think it's wor...
